HISTORY: Perfect Beef Shish Kabobs
The history of shish kabobs dates back centuries. The word “shish” comes from the Turkish word for “skewer,” while “kebab” refers to grilled or roasted meat. Historians believe that soldiers in the Middle East and Central Asia cooked meat over open fires using their swords as skewers. Over time, this practical cooking method evolved into a beloved culinary tradition throughout Turkey, Persia, Greece, and much of the Mediterranean region. As trade routes expanded and cultures blended, variations of kebabs spread across Europe, Asia, and eventually North America.
Today, shish kabobs are celebrated worldwide because of their versatility. Different cultures use lamb, beef, chicken, seafood, or vegetables, each adding unique seasonings and techniques. The American version often features marinated beef and colorful garden vegetables, making it a staple of summer grilling season.
