Cranberry-Maple Bourbon Sparkler

Cranberry-Maple Bourbon Sparkler

The Cranberry-Maple Bourbon Sparkler is a bright, ruby-red cocktail for Thanksgiving. There’s a moment on Thanksgiving when the kitchen is busy, the first guests have arrived, and dinner is still a little way off. That’s when I’d bring out the Cranberry-Maple Bourbon Sparkler. Its ruby-red color looks right at home on a holiday table, and the first sip is bright and tart enough to wake up your appetite.

Unsweetened cranberry juice gives the drink its color and a pleasantly sharp edge. Fresh lemon makes it brighter, while pure maple syrup rounds out the tartness and adds a little caramel flavor. Bourbon brings warmth, especially as the ice begins to melt. The last ingredient is chilled ginger beer, which gives the cocktail its bubbles and leaves a peppery tingle after each sip.

The garnish adds as much to the aroma as it does to the glass. Twist a strip of orange peel over the drink before dropping it in, and you’ll release the fragrant oils from the peel. Tuck a rosemary sprig beside the ice. The scent of evergreen and citrus reaches you before you taste the cranberry, and that small detail is what makes the drink feel especially suited to a late November gathering.

A single sparkler takes about five minutes to make. If you’re hosting, you can stir together the bourbon, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and maple syrup ahead of time and chill the mixture in a pitcher. When guests arrive, pour it over fresh ice and top each glass with ginger beer so the fizz is still lively when you hand it over.

How To Serve The Cranberry-Maple Bourbon Sparkler

I’d serve it with a bowl of salted pecans or a plate of sharp cheddar while the turkey rests. The cranberry and ginger stand up to those salty, savory bites, and the maple gives the drink just enough sweetness to make you want another sip before dinner.
