Warm Cinnamon-Orange Apple Cider

A pot of warm cinnamon-orange apple cider makes the kitchen smell like Thanksgiving before dinner even starts. As it warms, the scent of apples and cinnamon drifts into the hallway, and someone will inevitably wander in to ask what’s on the stove. I like to have a stack of mugs ready so the first guests can pour themselves something warm while dinner is still coming together.
Making Warm Cinnamon-Orange Apple Cider
Sweet apple cider is the base, and it has plenty of sweetness on its own. Fresh orange slices give it a little brightness, while cinnamon sticks lend a soft, familiar warmth. A few whole cloves add a deeper spice that comes through at the end of each sip. Fifteen minutes at a gentle simmer is enough to bring those flavors together. Once the cider is ready, strain out the spices and cooked orange slices and float a fresh slice in each mug.
One of the nicest things about serving cider at Thanksgiving is that children and adults can share the same pot. Let the children’s mugs cool until they’re comfortably warm, and keep the rest on the stove for anyone who wants a refill. A batch makes eight servings. You can simmer and strain it the day before, then refrigerate it and reheat it gently while you set out the appetizers.
I’d bring the cider back out when it’s time for pie. The orange is especially good alongside a buttery slice of pecan pie, and the cinnamon carries right through to a bite of apple or pumpkin pie. By then, the serving dishes may be stacked in the kitchen and someone may have claimed the last dinner roll. There’s still time to wrap your hands around a warm mug and stay at the table a little longer while somebody finishes the story they started before dinner.
Warm Cinnamon-Orange Apple Cider
Method
- Pour the cider into a large saucepan. Add half the orange slices, the cinnamon sticks, and the cloves. Set the remaining orange slices aside for serving.
- Bring the cider to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 15 minutes.
- Strain out the orange slices and spices. Ladle into mugs and add a fresh orange slice if desired. Let children’s servings cool until comfortably warm.
Notes
Prepare and strain the cider the day before, refrigerate it, and reheat gently on the stove before serving.
