Mother's Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world to honor and appreciate mothers and maternal figures for their love, care, and contributions to families and society. While the dates and customs may vary by country, the sentiment is universal: it's a day to recognize and thank mothers for all they do. Historical and Cultural Roots: Mother’s Day has deeper and older roots beyond the U.S.: Ancient Greece and Rome: Festivals were held to honor mother goddesses like Rhea (Greek) and Cybele (Roman). Mothering Sunday (UK): Originated in the Middle Ages as a religious tradition where people returned to their “mother church” during Lent. It gradually became a day to honor mothers as well. Other Traditions: In Ethiopia, Mother’s Day is tied to a multi-day festival called Antrosht, celebrating motherhood with feasting and singing. In many Arab countries, it's celebrated on March 21, the first day of spring. In Thailand, it is celebrated on August 12, the birthday of Queen Sirikit, considered the mother of the nation.
