In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It’s a day when families and friends gather for a feast — traditionally featuring roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie — and give thanks for the year’s blessings. Parades (like Macy’s in New York), football games, and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season have all become part of the modern celebration. The story most Americans learn traces back to 1621, when English Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony (in present-day Massachusetts) held a harvest feast with the Wampanoag people. The Pilgrims were English separatists who fled religious persecution, arriving on the Mayflower in 1620. After a brutal first winter, about half the settlers had died. The survivors learned farming and local crops from Indigenous peoples — particularly Tisquantum (Squanto), a Patuxet man who had lived in England and spoke English.
